Peter Newton

Chief Executive Officer

B.Agr.Sc, MBA

Peter is Chief Executive Officer of the Cheetham Salt Group (“Cheetham”), which comprises the Group’s salt operations in Australia and Indonesia. He joined Cheetham in 2008 and has held a number of sales and operations position during his tenure. He holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration, a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Science, and is a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. 

Prior to joining Cheetham, Peter worked for major Australian companies in a variety of sales, technical, operations and site leadership roles. He has extensive experience in the agricultural sector.

Eric Tai

Chief Financial Officer

B. Commerce, CPA, Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors

Eric joined Cheetham Salt as Commercial Finance Manager in 2015 and was promoted to Group General Manager Finance in April 2022.

Prior to joining Cheetham Salt, Eric built a robust background in commercial and finance roles across industries such as manufacturing, FMCG, and automotive. As a strategic leader with a focus on stakeholder engagement, he is committed to enhancing organisational performance. With his broad expertise in commercial finance, Eric excels at navigating complex business landscapes. He is also a confident and effective communicator, adept at steering the business toward financial growth and success.

John Varcoe

Group Manager, HSEQ & People

B.Sc. Double Major - Food Science & Technology

John is an accomplished leader with over 35 years of experience in Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (HSEQ) across the retail, manufacturing, food production, and consultancy sectors. He leads the HSEQ and People & Culture functions, driving strategic initiatives that promote operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and a strong, engaged workplace culture.


John was the founder and Managing Director of a successful consultancy and training business advising a broad portfolio of clients on best practice in quality management, safety, environmental performance and organisational development.

His career includes notable leadership roles such as Technical Director at George Weston Foods where he led cross-functional teams to deliver technical excellence and continuous improvement and at Coles Group where he significantly advanced food safety and quality management across domestic and international supply chain operations.


John brings a people-centric leadership style, underpinned by deep technical expertise and a passion for sustainable business practices. He is committed to building empowered teams, strengthening corporate governance, and ensuring Cheetham Salt continues to lead the way in responsible and high-quality manufacturing across all operations.

Tim Seletto

National Sales & Marketing Manager

B Bus Mktg, B Bus IT

Tim is a commercial leader with a strong track record in driving business performance across Australia’s fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector. At Cheetham Salt, Tim leads the Customer Focus Team, with overarching responsibility for sales, marketing, legal, customer service, supply chain and planning. His role is central to developing and executing strategic initiatives that drive top-line growth, enhance efficiency, and optimise profitability.

Tim has expertise in commercial strategy, cross-functional team leadership, and performance optimisation. His leadership style combines a data-driven mindset with a strong commercial acumen, enabling him to identify and lead market opportunities across Australia and international markets. 

Prior to joining Cheetham Salt, Tim held key sales and marketing positions at several of Australia’s most recognised FMCG companies, including Wilmar Sugar, National Foods, Costa, and Lion. 

Tim's function is pivotal in shaping the company’s go-to-market strategy and operational execution, ensuring Cheetham Salt continues to meet the evolving needs of its customers while maintaining strong commercial discipline. He is passionate about building high-performing teams, fostering collaborative partnerships, and driving sustainable business outcomes.

Ludi van der Merwe

National Operations Manager

B.Eng (Chem), MBA

Ludi is an experienced operations and manufacturing management professional with extensive expertise across multiple ASX listed manufacturing operations. With a proven track record of innovative thinking and excellent problem-solving skills, Ludi is skilled at influencing and engaging teams to consistently meet and exceed targets.

Ludi has held various leadership and managerial roles in diverse industries, including feed/Food, fertilizer manufacturing, gases & welding, and optical fibre manufacturing. His experience spans notable organisations such as Incitec Pivot, Ridley Corporation, and BOC/Afrox.

A strong leader, Ludi excels in developing high performing teams across all our Australian sites, implementing and supporting continuous improvement and change initiatives to drive operational excellence.

Alain Le Bon

National Engineering & Maintenance Manager

B. Eng (Manufacturing), MBA, Dip Project Management, PG Dip Business & Management

With over 25 years of experience, Alain has built a strong focus on continuous improvement across a diverse range of industries, including Automotive, Medical, Healthcare, Cosmetics, Food, Beverage, and Dairy.

Throughout his career, Alain has held various positions at site, national, and international levels, covering areas such as process improvement, continuous improvement, maintenance, reliability, engineering, and project and technical management. Reporting up to director level, his primary driver has always been to deliver sustained improvements in safety, quality, delivery, and cost, ultimately enhancing the competitiveness of the organisations he has worked for.

In Alain's current role at Cheetham Salt, he oversees Reliability and Engineering at sites via the Cheetham’s Manufacturing excellence program and Capital program. Alain also is responsible for Procurement and Cheetham’s Corio site and is 2IC for National Operations of Cheetham Sites.     

Sue En Leong

Financial Controller

B. Business, CPA

Sue En brings a people-centred approach to finance, with a focus that encompasses business profitability, value creation, reporting, and controllership. Her background in the FMCG sector, combined with early career experience at Deloitte, has given her a broad and practical understanding of both commercial drivers and financial discipline.

She is committed to aligning finance with business strategy and invests in fostering an environment where people feel empowered to contribute. Sue En’s leadership and financial acumen play a key role in helping the business grow, adapt, and succeed.

Judy Freeman

National Manager, People & Culture

B. Business

Judy is a strategic senior HR professional with international experience spanning the agribusiness, manufacturing, financial services, and retail industries. With a proven ability to engage and maintain key relationships, Judy delivers commercially focused people solutions within large, complex environments.

Judy provides strong stakeholder management skills and is committed to achieving results through a collaborative and values driven approach.

Specialties include managing change, acting as a trusted business partner in HR and payroll, driving process improvements (including systems and processes), and leading change programs across the business.
