We develop programs and activities under each of the Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) categories

At Cheetham Salt, sustainability is built on 4 key pillars: People, Business, Community, and Environment. We are committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive workplace for our employees; running an efficient, ethical, and resilient business; actively engaging with and supporting the communities where we operate; and protecting the natural environment that sustains our operations. From improving operational practices and investing in innovation to reducing our environmental footprint, we aim to create long-term value that benefits both people and the planet.

Environment

Unique ecosystems surround our salt fields such as wetlands, coastal areas and native vegetation. Protecting this environment is essential to maintaining natural biodiversity, preserving water quality, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of salt harvesting.

The production of salt, which is a non-depletable resource, causes minimal disturbance to the natural environment.

We are committed to managing our natural resources and reducing our environmental footprint.

Biodiversity

The Cheetham Salt fields are home to rich ecosystems and various bird species like the Capricorn Yellow Chat and diverse native vegetation. The salt fields also play a vital role in capturing carbon through mangroves and tidal marshes offering efficient carbon storage and long term carbon sequestration

Our Biodiversity Policy helps guide the protection of the unique ecosystems surrounding our salt fields, ensuring that our operations support long-term environmental health.

Carbon Emissions

We have measured our current carbon footprint at approximately 10,000 tonnes of CO₂e, and in support of Australia’s Net Zero 2050 target, we have established a detailed decarbonisation pathway.

Key initiatives include reducing our reliance on LPG and exploring cleaner alternatives to fossil fuels in our processing stages.

Packaging

Most of our products are already delivered in recyclable and reusable materials, and we are actively working on 100% sustainable packaging, in alignment with the National Environment Protection Measures (NEPM).

Across all sites, we prioritise waste separation and diversion from landfill, ensuring our salt production processes remain as environmentally conscious as they are efficient.

Social

The Social Pillar (People and Community) incorporates the activities that all of our sites undertake to make our business a safe and successful place to work.

Major activities are designed to support teams' safety and well being. Under the Social Pillar we also develop initiatives to work with diverse communities. From local employment, schools, businesses, councils, bird watching groups, not for profit organisations to land care groups we believe it is essential to actively contribute to the communities where we work and live.

Certifications

As a member of the SEDEX platform, we actively manage supplier relationships and uphold high standards of social compliance throughout our supply chain. In the past year, we achieved zero work-related fatalities and maintained a Lost Time Injury Rate (LTIR) of 0.0, underscoring our focus on a safe and supportive workplace.

Each year, we publish a Modern Slavery Statement, reaffirming our commitment to identifying, managing, and mitigating the risk of modern slavery across our operations and supply network.

Community

In line with our Social sustainability pillar, we regularly engage with and support our local communities - through initiatives such as donations to Foodbank, contributions to local schools, and partnerships with councils to strengthen community resilience and wellbeing.

Governance

Within the Governance (Business) Pillar we develop robust policies to support our role as a responsible and ethical salt manufacturer.

Our systems ensure ethical, transparent, and responsible business practices. This includes ethical sourcing, promoting diversity and inclusion, and annually reporting on gender equality and sustainability to maintain high standards within our business.

Ethical Sourcing Policy

Our Ethical Sourcing Policy ensures that all goods and services used in our salt production and supply are obtained responsibly, supporting fair labour practices, safe working conditions, environmental responsibility, and eliminating unethical practices such as forced or child labour. This policy is reviewed annually and shared with suppliers on a three-year cycle to uphold standards across our supply chain.

Diversity Equality & Inclusion Policy

We promote a respectful and inclusive workplace through our Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Policy, which reflects our commitment to equal opportunities across all operations. As part of this, we submit an annual WGEA (Workplace Gender Equality Agency) report to support gender equality and fair remuneration across our workforce.

Reporting

Our ESG report is published annually, allowing us to track, reflect, and improve on our sustainability and governance practices across all of our salt sites.
